　　最早過六一兒童節的國家是土耳其，他們在1920年就開始了。1925年，在日內瓦國際會議上，瑞士等52個國家共同召開了主題為“讓孩子們更幸福全球會議。

　　之所以把6月1日作為國際兒童節，一種說法是1925年，中國駐美國的總領事曾在舊金山領著一些中國孤兒仔慶祝端午節。那一年的端午節剛好是6月1日，發生地時間與之前的日內瓦會議相符。

　　1942年6月，德國法西斯黨衛軍包圍了現在捷克共和國的首都布拉格市附近的利迪策村，槍殺了16歲以上男性公民140多人，全部嬰兒和婦女被押往集中營，另外有90名兒童被押往波蘭的一個集中營(其中只有17人活到戰爭結束)。村里所有的房舍、建筑物均被燒毀或被鏟土機夷為平地。就這樣，一個好好的村莊被法西斯黨衛軍毀滅了。

　　為了悼念利迪策村和全世界所有在戰爭中死難的兒童，反對帝國主義戰爭販子虐殺、毒害兒童，保障兒童的權利，1949年11月在蘇聯首都莫斯科召開的國際民主婦女聯合會理事會通過一項決議，正式決定每年的6月1日為全世界兒童的節日，即六一國際兒童節。

　　目前世界上不少國家將6月1日定為兒童的節日，稱為國際兒童節。然而，在歐美國家，兒童節的日期各不相同，而且往往很少舉行社會公眾性的慶祝活動。

　　每年的6月1日，世界大多數國家都要舉辦各種形式的活動，來紀念這一節日。新中國成立后，中央人民政府政務院于1949年12月23日規定，將中國的兒童節與國際兒童節統一起來。　香港：4月4日

　　香港兒童節的日期仍然是中華民國時期定下的4月4日。但香港回歸后，慶祝六一兒童節也漸漸開始流行了起來。

　　美國：2001年前毫無規律，01年-07年為6月第一個周末，2009年被定為6月第二個周末(6月14日)。

　　新加坡：10月1日
